What is Pilates?
STOTT Pilates is a contemporary approach to the original exercise method pioneered by the late Joseph Pilates. It incorporates modern exercise principles, including contemporary thinking about spinal rehabilitation and athletic performance enhancement. For example, some approaches may promote a flat back, whereas STOTT Pilates exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints, placing more emphasis on scapular stabilisation.
What to expect:
You can expect an increase in strength, flexibility, mobility, balance, and body awareness, as well as a decrease in back pain or other general pains. At Roughan Chiropractic you will be taught Pilates in a clean, modern environment with brand new soft mats, to protect the spine and/or sore knees, by a STOTT Pilates internationally trained instructor. Our classes are small (max. 6) to offer you superior service, customisable for your special needs, with more attention from your instructor to ensure correct posture and alignment.
The benefits of Pilates:
- longer, leaner muscles (less bulk, more freedom of movement)
- improves postural problems
- increases core strength, stability and peripheral mobility
- helps prevent injury
- enhances functional fitness, ease of movement
- balances strength and flexibility
- heightens body awareness
- no-impact, easy on the joints
- can be customised to suit everyone from rehab patients to elite athletes
- complements other methods of exercise
- improves performance in sports (golf, skiing, skating etc)
- improves balance, coordination and circulation
Introducing STOTT Pilates instructor, Nadia McGowan
After living in Ireland for the past 10 years I have recently moved back to New Zealand with my husband Kevin. I started working at Roughan Chiropractic as a CA Technician and am now looking forward to the opportunity to add Pilates to the list of wellness options offered by Roughan Chiropractic.
I trained through Litton Lane Training Centre in Dublin as a STOTT Pilates instructor and qualified in February 2010.
Having played sports most of my life, two knee operations and then being diagnosed with Endometriosis, I looked for a more relaxing and gentle exercise technique. I joined a Pilates class in Dunboyne Co.Meath in 2006 and loved it. With the encouragement of my instructor Sinead, I decided to take it to the next level and become an instructor myself. My favourite saying is "Where there is a will, there is a way."
What to wear to classes:
There is nothing special about workout clothing for Pilates. You just need something that lets you move, is not too tight or too baggy, and lets the instructor see the line of your body. Shoes are not worn for Pilates workouts. Pilates mats are provided along with seat pads and head pads to ensure comfort and alignment while exercising. Exercise props are also provided in class, as needed.
We look forward to seeing you in class soon!
