Fuel Your Family With Seasonal Foods

Making GranolaAre you and your family getting the fuel you need to power up your day? With processed foods abounding and packed schedules, it’s not always easy to ensure that our bodies get the proper nutrients necessary for optimal health.

Shopping local for seasonal fruits and vegetables is a fun and terrific way to optimise your family’s nutrition. One of our favourite places to go is the Christchurch Farmer’s market; in fact, most of our team members go every Saturday morning.

This bustling market is located in the beautiful and historical grounds of Riccarton House & Bush, a unique New Zealand heritage site. It’s open every Saturday from 9 am to 1 pm.

Have A Go At Making Granola!

Making granola is a fun way to get your kids involved and eating healthy!

It is recommended that you use 5 cups of rolled oats as your base recipe since making in bulk saves time and money and also ensures that you’ll have plenty for the whole week.

Online you will find recipes with different seasonal ingredients and flavours so that you can create something new and different every week!

Granola is a great afternoon snack and can be enjoyed with milk or fruit toppings. Making your own granola allows you to choose your own ingredients and helps you save money.

The Base Recipe

  • 5 cups rolled oats
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • pinch of sea salt

Mix all together until all the oats are coated. Put in oven at 180°C for 20mins (turning halfway).

Then you can add whatever you feel like! Here are our two favourites:

Choc-nut version:

  • ½ cup almond butter
  • ½ cup cacao
  • 1/3 cup roughly chopped almonds

Tropical version:

  • 2 mashed bananas
  • ¾ cup pineapple pieces
  • 1 cup shredded coconut

What different delicious flavours can you come up with?
